15 million UK households now online

September 3, 2015

According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, 15.23 million homes in the UK now have internet access, an increase of almost one million over the last year.

The number of online households has grown 7 percent from 2006, to 61 percent of all homes in the UK, while the proportion of homes with broadband access has increased to 51 percent.

Sixty-nine percent of homes in London and the south-west have internet access, making this the top online-area, while Northern Ireland, Yorkshire & Humber and the north-east have the lowest level, with just over 50 percent of homes online.

Wales recorded the biggest increase in broadband access, from 32 percent of homes online in 2006 to 49 percent in 2015.

The survey also identified an increase in the amount people use the internet. Sixty seven percent of adults now use the internet every day with the over 40’s using it most frequently.

Searching the internet for information about goods and services was the most popular activity, especially for men, while email was the most popular activity for women.
